Gaining Perspective: Stereo Photography in the Classroom

Christopher Schneberger

Saturday, October 11 - 9:00AM to 12:00PM
Wayne State University

Stereo photography is often overlooked in the academic photography classroom. If it is mentioned at all, it's considered a 19th Century curiosity. However, stereo photography is alive and well, and it can spark enthusiasm and curiosity in the classroom. Once students grasp how stereopsis works – this illusion created inside their minds – it's a great metaphor to understand how more than one perspective on the world around them can give them better understanding. This hands-on workshop will showcase a range of different stereo photography forms and viewing mechanisms for participants to handle and view including 19th Century stereo cards, View-Masters, Realist slides, medium format transparencies, anaglyphs, phantograms, lenticulars, and digital phone viewers. We will learn how students can create stereo photography their phones or DSLR cameras and some simple, free software. This aims to help educators introduce stereo photography. Exhibition opportunities specific to stereo photography also will be discussed.
