Self-Preservation is a series of photographs created using alternative processes that print images onto leaves and tree rounds. In exploring my family history, I faced the challenges of tracing my African American genealogy, an issue complicated by the legacy of slavery. Through techniques like chlorophyll printing and cyanotypes, I connect family, history, and nature in a deeply personal exploration of self. As I age, I feel an urgent need to immortalize their memories while confronting their ephemeral nature. The prints are intrinsically impermanent and decay over time. Their transience mirrors the fleeting state of memories and history.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
