Shreepad Joglekar - Hungry Heartland Project is the culmination of the multimedia educational and outreach campaign initiated by Kansas State University students in three departments: Art, Journalism and Mass Communication, and English. The project comprises of photographic work, and short documentaries that reveal, document, and interpret the issues of healthy food accessibility and food insecurity in Kansas. This MWSPE teaching and learning lecture will focus on the photographic arm of this project. Abstracting from the specifics of Hungry Heartland project this lecture will attempt to construct a model of socially engaged media practice that can be adapted by other educators and individuals.
Elise Kirk - Pandemic-era placelessness reminds us that while we may now be virtually anywhere, a secure attachment to physical place remains critical to a sense of identity and belonging. This talk presents a university freshman seminar that has grappled with meaningfully experiencing, visualizing, and connecting to place. Picturing Place: Photographing Lawrence introduces new college students to the sustained photo project as a method of inquiry and understanding, culminating in public exhibition and dialogue at the county's Watkins Museum of History downtown. Ultimately the process promotes significant relationship-building with each student's new place.
