Pictograph

Kally Malcom

Saturday, November 07 - 9:00AM to 9:55AM
Clemson One Building

Kally Malcom’s constructed still life scenes converge at the intersection of visual art and storytelling. Each image in Pictograph examines autobiographical themes and intertwines color, pattern, and object arrangements to reference an underlying story. The images offer a rich visual experience, but reserve concrete meaning. Symbolic objects are employed much like the precisely chosen words in a poem. They offer clues through brief, vivid descriptors that enliven the senses and summon interpretation. Just as the poet juxtaposes words, lines and stanzas to feed the reader’s imagination, Malcom weaves together physical elements in each scene to allude to emotional realities beyond the tangible world.

The still life as a visual metaphor has a long tradition in Western art. Some of the most notable examples are the Dutch vanitas paintings of the 17thcentury. These paintings utilized symbolic objects and motifs to reference perceived moral decay and to caution against further failings. The same impulse to create symbolic imagery meant to explore and illuminate ideas still thrives in modern art today. This image-maker presentation will compare and contrast Pictograph images to some of these historical works to highlight the shared language of contemporary still life photography and this genre of historical painting.
