Looking at Appalachia

Roger May

Saturday, November 07 - 2:00PM to 2:55PM
Clemson One Building

With the launch of the War on Poverty in 1964, photographs from Appalachia depicted need at its greatest and poverty at its worst. The visual construct of Appalachia began long before these photographs of dilapidated shacks and poor, barefoot children, but were never more widely circulated and engrained in our collective memories than in the decade that would follow. Photography has been a powerful tool in developing, disseminating, and reinforcing stereotypes (not just in Appalachia, of course). But what if we used photography to deconstruct those preconceptions? The Looking at Appalachia project was launched in early 2014 to encourage photographers inside and outside the region, professional and amateur, to expand the view of the region and foster conversation around the idea of how Appalachia is seen. Through this project, we do not deny that stereotypes exist, but rather strive to tell a more complete story through widespread collaboration, participation, and community building.
