Unmanned Landscapes

Justin Ward

Friday, November 06 - 9:30AM to 10:00AM
Clemson One Building

Since the dawn of human kind, man has longed to view the earth from a gods-eye perspective. The past few years have seen the advent of affordable drone technology giving nearly anyone the ability to capture his or her own aerial imagery, in essence democratizing such a view. With the accessibility of this viewpoint come concerns of privacy and surveillance.

Unmanned Landscapes is an investigation into the suburban landscape using the eyes of this influential and controversial new technology. I am interested in creating images that are symbolic of suburban life and question the changing environment as the suburbs ebb and flow. My goal is to re-frame the way we perceive and interpret mundane suburban spaces through the examination of the structure and forms inherent in suburban design only visible from the air. By working in this fashion, I am also investigating the boundary between using a drone as an artistic medium and as a surveillance tool.

Unmanned Landscapes is meant to fuse realism with abstraction and nature with technology. I play in the space between what a place is and what it can become.
