Heritage Habitats

Ginger Owen and Vicki VanAmeyden

Friday, November 06 - 2:00PM to 2:55PM
Clemson One Building

This lecture will discuss the process-driven creation of collaborative artworks: Heritage Habitats by Ginger Owen and Vicki VanAmeyden. As visual artists, they have been collaborating on projects since 2006. Heritage Habitats are a series of physical spaces for invocation of ancestry. Framed around nostalgia and catharsis, these works are large scale, sculptural and experiential installations that emphasize the use of photomechanical processes (digital and traditional), and non-traditional or mixed media approaches to art making. Conceptually, Heritage Habitats illuminates concepts of impermanence and personal vs. collective histories. The work considers the role of the photographic image as a rich history for cataloging memories. Images are appropriated from family albums to emphasize concepts of imaging oneself in a genealogical lineage; they are iconic in nature and reference concepts linked to blueprints of identity. The installations also explore collective memory through vernacular photography, honoring history and tradition as the staples of human life. Ultimately, the works are a residue of the process of self-discovery and an expression of humanism.
