My work focuses on perceived and preconceived intelligence through something I call duncification. This is the process in which power structures such as government, the education system, and corporations deem intelligence unto people. This changes how we view ourselves and others.
I represent this by internally making tasks and tests for myself to perform based on my experiences as someone who had a poor experience in the education system. I photograph intelligence tests and odd labor based tasks, print them, and present them as research for the viewer to decide if I am intelligent or not based on these nonsensical images. They watch and stare as if they were seeing a child attempting to solve an equation on a whiteboard but they also don't know the answer. This makes the viewer actively duncify and reflect on my intelligence and their own.
I create the prints using a technique in a non traditional way to represent my understanding of intelligence and as a reflection of the task being performed. I rebuild chairs, a laborious task that seems to have a simple solution but can be remade in many ways and functions the same. Creativity and using your unique skills and understanding of the world is how intelligence should be understood not by menial repetitive tasks that instead prepare you for a factory line. This type of judgment of intelligence is the same thing that creates anti intellectualism and makes way for manipulation of others into thinking that their disadvantages have come from their peers not the people in charge causing problems like book bannings, and attacks on public and higher education.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
