Photographers often have an instinct for when an image feels right long before they can explain why. This session invites participants to close that gap through an exploratory photo walk across The Ohio State University's campus, followed by a reflective writing workshop.
The Art of Introspection is led by Ayat Ibrahim, Sarah Jenkins, and Sarra Negassi, graduate students in OSU's Department of Arts Administration, Education, and Policy, along with Ky Smiley, a Columbus-based photographer and graduate of OSU's Department of Art.
During the photo walk, participants will explore The Ohio State University Oval and photograph whatever draws their attention. In the workshop that follows, they will revisit their images and use the provided prompts to articulate what drew them to particular subjects and why. This portion of the session will also include time for participants to discuss their findings and reflections with one another and share experiences from their own practice and educational careers.
This session is designed for educators who work with entry-level photographers, though all are welcome. Exploration and self-reflection help photographers build confidence in their body of work and in the motivations behind it. Learning to put these reflections into words is a valuable part of the process as it prepares emerging photographers to discuss their work with the people who engage with it, including commercial clients, mentors, and fine art professionals.
Each participant will leave with a complete lesson plan to implement in their classroom, aimed at helping entry-level photographers develop and communicate their creative voice.
Participants should come prepared to explore their environment, engage with one another, and reflect upon their work. The session will first meet in the lobby of Hopkins Hall, then the photo walk will take place on the campus Oval, which is located directly outside of the building and features many accessible, paved sidewalks and places to sit. A digital camera or a phone camera is sufficient, as the images captured on the walk will be used in the workshop. In the event of inclement weather, the photo walk will take place inside the building.
