Bradley Marshall & Mathieu Grenier - The Exhibition Examined
For the last three years, Mathieu Grenier's work has explored the history of exhibitions and/or specific artworks through re-enactment strategies and the observation of the exhibition space as a photographic component. Free Standing Images examines how art generates experiences within the gallery space and how art history shapes our perceptions of art and aesthetics. Through installation and photography, Grenier uses his personal background as a visitor and an artist to express how we find ourselves engaged in a process of consciousness in art. His new bodies of work reflect various understandings of the photographic medium and its relevance in contemporary culture, with his current research focusing on digital imaging technologies and how this structures our perception of photography. Whether in the digital or physical realm, the image reveals itself through a defined space, which conveys a formatted and limited experience.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
