Baton Rouge (French for "Red Stick"!) is the capitol city of the State of Louisiana, is the state's second-largest city, and is home to Louisiana State University. Located 80 miles northwest of New Orleans. The city's name comes from the 1699 sighting, by French explorers, of a 30-foot high wooden red-painted post that marked the boundary of the indigenous Houma and Bayogoula hunting grounds. French settlement of Baton Rouge dates to 1721. Uprooted settlers from the Acadia region of Canada later moved to the area, but maintained a unique cultural identity, popularly known as Cajun. In 1846, the Louisiana State Legislature moved the state capitol to Baton Rouge, as New Orleans was considered too "sinful."
Saturday, October 6 will also be Baton Rouge's 2nd annual Bloom Festival of Music and Arts, at River Road. Planted on the downtown levee, BLOOM works to create a garden of diversity and unity through love of art, music and food. This year's musical headliner is New Orleans bounce music icon, Big Freedia.
