Beyond Representation: Impact, Intent, and Institutional Change

Saturday, September 26 - 1:00PM to 1:45PM

This panel will focus on and discuss ideas of impact vs. intent in art, and especially how it pertains to the way that the world is changing around us. In keeping with the theme of 'Looking Inward' the panel will analyze how we create art: What the intent behind our pieces may be, what impact those pieces may have, for better or for worse. Are stereotypes perpetuated in our works? Are we considering the ever changing intersections of marginality in how we are interacting with subjects and/ or models? How does intent inform impact and how is it controlled (if at all) in the effect that art works have on others? In this moment in time it is very important to consider how we express ourselves while also thinking about how we are impacting others in our pieces. In a time of great uncertainty and systemic inequity we should consider more deeply how the intersections of marginalization impacts artists and viewers of all kinds.

When defining intersections of marginalization we may think of the more widely recognized marginalized groups, those who are discriminated against based on: race, gender, sexuality, socio- economic status, religion or creed, and ability. We will do our best to touch on each of these groups and discuss what meaningful representation may look like (given time and other limitations). For example, are we as artists going in with the intent to uplift these voices? Or is the impact that we talk over them? In presenting on this topic as a panel we will address these different areas from multiple perspectives. I am aware that not all perspectives align perfectly and that should be part of the learning experience.
