Charles Mason has lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for 35 years. He teaches fine art photography and photojournalism at the UAF, and actively and passionately pursues his own work. During the last few years, Charles has been making wet plate photographs, using his VW camper as his "Whatsitwagon" darkroom. Charles has won many awards for his work, including the Oskar Barnack Award at World Press Photo, POY awards, and others. He's had many solo shows in and out of Alaska, and has received two Rasmuson Foundation arts grants. His prints are collected by individuals and a number of museums.
Charles has been published widely (New York Times, Outside Magazine, Time, LIFE, GEO, and many others). He covers Alaska stories for the New York Times, and is represented by the Well Street Art Co. (Fairbanks) and Getty Images.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
