Archiving Identity // Analog Abstraction

Lightning Round: Chloe Dichter

Sunday, September 15 - 9:40AM to 9:55AM
ELIF 301

I have always struggled with the concept of home. After living in multiple states for no longer than 8 years at a time, I have always felt a disconnection between me and the places I've called "home." Being someone who seeks change, I have yet to feel this sense of "home" and geographical belonging. But after uncovering loads of family photos (negatives and prints) and reels upon reels of home videos, this feeling of "home" emerged. I discovered that I didn't need to feel emotionally attached to a location to feel at home, I just needed to feel closer to my family. Home for me, is my family and their history.

For the first portion of the session, I will delve into a series of archived images that showcase the everyday lives of my Polish/American Jewish family spanning from the early 1900s till about the 1970s. Alongside with these images are love letters that were sent between my grandparents in the early 1950s. This series examines the relationships between cultural identity and the hunger for individuality.

The second half of the session will explore my own photographic work centered around experimentation. Some of the works will be based around the the idea of gender identity and expression and others investigate the abstraction of body and place.
