How a six-week documentary project turned into nineteen years. I will show photographs, play oral histories and share my stories about coming into unknown communities and becoming family. This presentation will explain and explore representation of often-overlooked communities, gaining access and trust, and my personal feelings and obligation to my subjects to respect them.
Too many times I believe the photographer tries to elevate themselves instead of their subjects. I am not that photographer and never want to be. I will also discuss the decisions one has to make in editing and publishing. We will have questions and answers during the image presentation.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
