How do we better address the needs of marginalized and underrepresented students? This workshop will bring in the perspectives, strategies, and experiences of the participates (both students and educators) to share information on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for students of color, transgender/queer students, women, differently abled students, etc. This can include topics such as pronouns, showing more diverse artists in class, student discussions about gender and race in the art world, how to create an inclusive culture in the classroom, how to address issues that might arise via student to student or student to teacher, and any specific questions people may have.
We will discuss small gestures and changes educators can make, as well as large fundamental changes that could happen in the classroom, regarding these issues. My role will be to facilitate the discussion and contribute what I've learned from my students and my experience as a transgender professor, and to gather the information from the workshop and distribute it out at a later date. This workshop will focus on the collective knowledge of the participants as a way to share information and help us better understand how educators and students can work together to make a more inclusive and social justice-minded classroom.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
