ELIF 305
Visual Sovereignty is a practice of asserting autonomy through self-representation in media, independent of constructs created by non Indigenous definitions. This session will focus on Alaskan Native photographers and filmmakers working within the framework of Visual Sovereignty. Alaska Native artist, Da-ka-xeen Mehner, and non-Native filmmaker, Maya Salganek, will share approaches for including visual sovereignty into creative practice in the classroom from both a Native and non-Native perspective. How do Alaska Native artists represent themselves, the land, their culture, and the environment?
Each will present on past and contemporary Indigenous representation within the arts of Alaska, and dialogue on different approaches artists take.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
