Orientation: Unsure is a series of photographs which reconstructs memories from Joshua's adolescence to early adult life that relate directly to his struggle with his sexuality. This presentation will discuss microaggressions and how they affect marginalized people (especially at a younger age), the links between homophobia and misogyny, creating art as a means to better understand yourself, and moreover Joshua's journey from inside the closet to being openly gay.
Western societal mores come with expectations such as gender roles, heteronormativity, masculinity in boys, and femininity in girls. The way we think about gender has a long list of deeply embedded microaggressions: "don't be a girl", "man up", "she's a bitch", "that's gay". The list goes on, including less obvious phrases and actions. What exactly do they mean? And upon reflection, how do they confuse an adolescent trying to define their gender or sexuality?
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
