Alaska Native Youth & the Story of Climate Change

Panel with Frank Chythlook, Eben Hopson, Sev Kulowigi and Ryan Miklahook

Friday, September 13 - 9:00AM to 10:30AM

This summer, three youth, one from Utqiaġvik and two from Savoonga on the Bering Sea will photograph and film Kasegelek Lagoon on the Chukchi Sea. In our presentation, we want to describe the environment, how it has been observed changing, and how we got the pictures and video to tell that story. As a science research organization, WCS fills a gap between communities and governments where scientific knowledge is needed to inform policy. Here in Fairbanks, that includes providing opportunity in capacity-building mode, relating what our partners see in their daily lives regarding climate change. The training ground for this is in documenting our research, in the case of summer 2019 - assessing the breeding population of Pacific common eiders (Somateria mollissima v-nigrum) nesting on barrier islands in the Chukchi Sea in order to understand how this population will be impacted by climate change.
