Oregon State University first offered photography as part of its for-credit curriculum in 1891, making it one of the first colleges or universities in the western United States to do so. Photography became embedded in not only the curriculum, but the culture of the university. Its importance as a medium with both scientific and artistic merit was recognized from the start. The college's 1893 annual report annual report stated that "photography is important to the student for its educational value in applying his knowledge of chemistry and physics, while for its esthetic culture it is invaluable."
