In Between / A Video Screening

Photography and cinema are intrinsically linked as art forms. Cinema plays on photography's vernacular and expands upon its relationship between artist and subject. This series of short films contextualizes that dynamic and explores topics including the self, gender politics and the fragility of the human body.

For example, in Liza Sylvestre's  __at i_ I _old you a __ory in a language I _an _ear?, the artist directly addresses the camera to reflect her deterioration in hearing. Likewise, Ulf Lundin's Mamma explores his relationship with his mother and her dementia. The film, composed of simultaneous triptychs, intimately paints a portrait of a relationship at a crossroads. Finally, works such as Lei Han's Hun Dun and Ruxandra Mitache's RGB ROOM_remixed antithetically examine shapes and color in their purest form, yet also feature connections. Undulating masses collide within a white canvas in the former, while strips of color momentarily blink and connect with sparse sounds in the latter.

The forms presented within the frames of these short films allow the viewer a glimpse into how these artists navigate film's relationship to other disciplines. Whether geometric or organic, observational or performative these films strengthen the connection between photography and cinema.
