Although Lith printing is a positive-negative printing process conducted in the darkroom, the printing procedure and results are anything but traditional: exposure controls contrast, development controls shadow detail and a rather experimental approach to timing is necessary! The lith printing technique produces a distinctive silver gelatin print where colors, contrast and textures of the highlights and shadows can be manipulated and exaggerated separately. Highlights are characterized by soft contrast with warm coloration such as yellows, pinks and browns. While the shadow tonalities are cold, contrasty, and very grainy (the result of something called "infectious" development!).
This introductory workshop will explore the main techniques, materials and procedures for producing Lith prints. Participants will have ample time in the darkroom to experiment with the process and learn to control and manipulate the unique aesthetic characteristics of the prints. Additional techniques including pseudo-lith, toning and various digital possibilities with lith will be discussed.
WHAT TO BRING:
Participants must bring full tonal range negatives of a variety of subject matter (35 or 120mm). If you do not have negatives, I will print digital negatives for participants, images must be emailed to me AT LEAST a week before the workshop (7" on the longest side at 300ppi). Silver gelatin paper will be provided for the workshop, however the lith results differ with each brand and type of paper, if you have some silver gelatin paper that you would like to try, please bring it along (Illford does not lith well, many other brands do!). Finally, if you have old silver gelatin prints that were too dark when originally printed we can try pseudo-lith if time permits.
