The Constructed Image: From Darkroom to Digital

Jacquelyn Tait Leebrick

Saturday, October 11 - 9:00AM to 10:00AM
Jenkins Fine Art Center Speight Auditorium

During the last 40 years I have explored a variety of methods of altering the photographic image to remove the image from direct representation of external reality to create a personal narrative. As the photographic media evolved, so has my involvement in the processes I use to construct my images. The resulting artwork reflects changes in both process and content. The thread tying my work together is the manipulation and assembly of the image. The presentation will address the pairing of process to concept and how the digital tool has impacted the construction of my images. The media I have explored ranges from darkroom (wet process or digital) manipulation to the construction of images to be photographed and later altered through adding other media such as paint, stitching, encaustic or transferring the image onto a new surface. This presentation reflects my shifts in media and as well as content as the technology has evolved. I will discuss how processes my earlier work such as multi-printing of negatives and hand- painting black and white gelatin prints expanded with the advent of the digital tool to incorporate polymer lifts, Polaroid transfers and digital negatives combined with alternative processes.
