In 1834, William Henry Fox Talbot invented the photogenic drawing process. Disillusioned with the images he traced with his "faithless pencil" and a camera lucida, Talbot sought to make permanent the ephemeral images he saw on his ground glass, and experimented with salted paper and silver nitrate until he was able to capture the shadows of botanical specimens he saw outside his home. Those early photographs are very simple botanical studies, but represent one of the most direct photographic processes. Lumen prints are a close cousin to those early images, but can produce beautiful colors and unexpected results using common darkroom materials and sunlight. This workshop will explore the lumen print process on various papers and emulsions and print finishing options. Participants are encouraged to bring large format negatives (film and digital), as well as interesting translucent materials.
