From Objects to Datasets: Photography, Archives and Materiality Today
Lately, we have ample opportunity to consider the accumulative tendencies of our digital age. We speak of photographic images en masse in watery terms -- as floods, rivers, oceans, and waves -- and understand their increasingly digital iterations as enmeshed within malleable and circulatory networks of online space. But it is less often that we consider photographic disappearance within these same formulations. Over the past decade, artists have been instrumental in illuminating these seemingly contradictory convergences, making work that moves through material and immaterial dimensions. This talk will address accumulation and disappearance as two sides of the same coin, and both as key factors in moving toward a redefined notion of materiality in photographic production, circulation, and preservation today.
