Friday, September 21 - 10:00AM to 12:00PM
In this participatory workshop, contributors will explore the making of photographic works as a form of intellectual inquiry. One of the benefits of working in a state university is the opportunity to work collaboratively or to interact with research academics. Many of these researchers welcome working with artists as they act as interpreters able to disseminate complex ideas to a more general audience. On the other hand, lamentably, the default role assigned to photographers is often that of providing documentation. Therefore, this workshop will focus on sharing practical tactics for encouraging and developing a research-driven photographic practice that goes beyond
that of documentarian. The workshop will explore possible roles of the photographer in research-driven practices such as the artist as synthesizer, the artist as change-agent, the artist as interpreter, the artist as subjective voice, and art making as a mindful activity.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
