Forest Seclusion was created while on a retreat at a secluded home in the Willamette National Forest, near Mckenzie Bridge, Oregon. The images in Forest Seclusion represent human isolation, framed by the overwhelming presence of nature, and the mystery of the deep woods that surround the home. Having lived most of my life in the high desert of Utah, I find the forest to have a surreal character, and seemingly oppressive depth, that without knowledge feels cold and uninviting in contrast to the familiarity of a warm, inviting home. The series works to visualizes the dissonance humans can have with the natural environment, and the feeling of seclusion that can be a byproduct.

The images created for the series required a certain mood and visual aesthetic. I worked to illustrate the impression of an omniscience presence, greater than what is portrayed in the frame, then accent that invisible presence by showing no more than a single human per image. Atmospherically, I utilized a supernatural lighting aesthetic, created by light painting and by manipulating the color temperature of the sunlight. This manipulation is to portray the natural light as artificial, cold, and uninviting, accentuating the mysterious nature of the forest. To contrast the cold artificiality of the natural environment, man-made light sources were significantly warmed to resonate with a subdued safety.
