Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the 1962 Teaching Conference

Jessica S. McDonald

Friday, November 02 - 4:30PM to 6:00PM
Visual Studies Workshop

The 2012 meeting of SPE's Northeast Region marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Invitational Teaching Conference, organized by Nathan Lyons and held in Rochester in November of 1962. The participants in that conference agreed to work toward a formal organization, and officially founded the Society for Photographic Education when they met in Chicago the following year. McDonald will reconstruct the details of the 1962 Invitational Teaching Conference, and will present the ways in which the event united a field of disconnected scholars, teachers, and practitioners, allowing them to combine their efforts to build and legitimize the field of photography. McDonald will also interview special guests Nathan Lyons and Ken Josephson about their experience respectively organizing and attending the 1962 Teaching Conference.
