What constitutes a photograph? When does a photograph become an image or when does anrnimage become a photograph? These are questions that have been asked more broadly of artrnin general and in academic circles, yet there is still no consensus as to where to place artistsrnwho go beyond the traditional idea of a photograph. What does it mean to be a photographicrn"maker" as opposed to a photographic "taker"? What does it mean to be an artist versus arnphotographer? Is there any difference between the two? These are questions discussedrnamongst artists using photosensitive techniques who share a desire to see beyond therncameraʼs viewfinder.rnThis panel discussion will explore different perspectives on constructing photography throughrnconventional methods such as silver gelatin prints, archival digital prints and alternativernprocesses and unconventional methods such as mixed media, book arts, image transfers andrninstallation. Each panelist looks to broaden how a photograph is perceived and interpreted, rnexpanding on how a photograph is "supposed" to look and consider what is truthful andrnnecessary to create the intended dialog with the audience through their work.rn
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
