Rachel Rushing & Crystal McBrayer
Thursday, October 02 - 1:30PM to 3:30PM
PHOT Darkrooms
Crystal McBrayer and Rachel Rushing will present a workshop exploring possibilities in organic
photographic methods. At previous SPE conferences, McBrayer and Rushing have shared their
knowledge and work in the Anthotype process, using plant pigment as a liquid emulsion. Organic
photography is ripe for proliferation in the photographic community as increasingly digital
workflows push contemporary artists to explore up-to-date analog methods that provide richness
and variety in image quality without the toxicity of traditional chemical processes. In this workshop
McBrayer and Rushing will share techniques in natural dying processes and work with participants to
create non-toxic toning samples based on combining traditional natural dying methods with
contemporary and historical photographic printing processes. Though some materials will be
available for experimentation, participants are encouraged to bring working samples of multiple
print process to explore possibilities specific to their own practice.
