COIL: Collaborative Online International Learning

Friday, October 28 - 3:30PM to 4:15PM

In 2010, The State University of New York (SUNY) implemented the SUNY Center for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). The center is one of the leading international organizations focused on the emerging field of Globally Networked Learning (GNL). As described by SUNY, these “programs foster faculty and student interaction with peers abroad through co-taught multicultural online and blended learning environments emphasizing experiential student collaboration.” After completing an online training, SUNY pairs its qualified faculty with professors in over 25 partnering institutions around the world including universities in Mexico, Lebanon, Turkey, Japan, Columbia, Scotland, Australia and Russia.

In June 2015, I completed the online COIL training and in the Fall of 2015, Professor Manuela Paterno Patrucca, a photography professor at Universidad de LaSalle in Mexico City, and I decided to run our first COIL project in Spring 2016. I am planning to attend a COIL workshop in Curnevaca, Mexico this semester in which I will be paired up with another Mexican professor (still to be determined) to plan and teach a new COIL course in the spring.

For this SPE workshop, I will begin with presenting the history, mission, and scope of the COIL program. I will then highlight the successes and struggles with my Spring 2016 COIL course which Professor Patrucco and I titled, An International View of Photography. I will also show and discuss the Wordpress website and work that our students co-created during the course of the semester. I believe this presentation will be of great interest and value to not only SUNY faculty who attend this year’s conference in New York City, but to any photography professors who want to learn more about collaborative learning and/or distance education learning projects.
