Caprice 2
In Shouting Fire, I tackle our violent past and present, arranging and photographing objects that have been used as shooting targets. Begun a decade ago in 2012, the work reflects the United States' ever-widening cultural fractures and political extremism. Shot with large format cameras, this work bears a relationship to traditional documentary. However, I use lighting and my arrangements to assert particular narratives and make pointed references, in an uncomfortable collaboration with the shooters.
Referencing everything from 17th C. Dutch still life painting to prepper culture and protein powder advertisements, this project explores connections between the injustice and violence that underlie the foundations of this country and the inflection point where we now find ourselves. Ultimately, Shouting Fire attempts to unravel why the promotion of gun rights has become so central to the political identities of so many, and what the dire consequences of that obsession are.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
