Caprice 2
In my presentation, I will guide the viewer through my self-discovering research and the work being made for my MFA thesis exhibition for the spring of 2023 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My thesis research begins with interviewing elders in my family to learn about their time spent in Italy and the process of immigrating to Cleveland, Ohio. I am a first-generation immigrant. I have learned that for Italian immigrants and their descendants, textiles (needlework), represent a marker of identity. Italian women often and continue to have dowry of textiles made to be passed down through generations. This collection is referred to as a corredo. When my family was preparing to emigrate, my grandmother sold her corredo o textiles to financially support their trip. My presentation will examine how I continue my lineage of fiber craftswomen through my interdisciplinary practice of photography, book arts, and textiles. It is important that I create my own version of a contemporary corredo.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
