John Tonai grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California. He is an is an artist and associate professor of Art at the University of Northern Colorado. Having earned a BA in History from the University of Sioux Falls and an MFA from the University of Minnesota, he combines these two in his work, which is primarily concerned with the experiences of the Japanese American community both historically and in contemporary society. Having grown up in the Los Angeles Japanese American culture, he seeks to bring their narratives to the forefront of conversation. His work has been shown at the Japanese American National Museum, National Japanese American Historical Society. Tonai served on the SPEW board 2005-2009
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
