CFA 2018
I took several classes in college that met each week in the southern California desert; the long drives through the seemingly desolate ultimately revealed that no place is truly empty, redefining my understanding of the void, the archive and the art object. Shadow Monuments was born out of these explorations where excavating from absence leaves room for the unseen, the invisible, and the mysterious fragments of history that craft past, present and future to envision the artist as researcher and research as art form to unearth what the Archive's taxonomy conceals. Creating this piece demanded a medium with flexibility, like video, to construct layers that contemplate and reveal the interlocking histories and suppressed fragments of space and place.
