Andy Mattern - Getting Your Work Out (Or: How to Steadily Apply for Open Calls, Exhibitions, Competitions, etc.)

Beyond making excellent photographs in the first place and having something to say as artists, how do we create avenues to present our work? Of course we all want to share what we do. We hope to find kindred spirits in excited audiences, or maybe we want to stir things up. But how do we get our work out of the studio and into the world? The gist: Apply. Apply. Apply. In this presentation, I will share the many lists of open calls I visit weekly along with my personal approach to keeping track of submissions year to year. How do you choose the calls that are worth the submission fee? What opportunities are a good fit for you? Should you attend a portfolio review, if so, which one? How hopeful or resigned should you be when applying? Participants in this session will leave with a clutch of tools and recommendations for getting their work out and a peak behind the curtain of the submissions game. There is no substitute for making the best work we can, that is always step one, but without a ongoing campaign to get the work out, it may never see the light of day. Welcome to your new part time job: Apply. Apply. Apply.
