I am questioning patronage in the 21stcentury in how it affects modern emerging artists. Who is funding emerging artists and how does it alter their work? I’m finding that over the years, many of the emerging artists I meet at residencies, exhibits and while traveling are not having their projects funded by the sales of their work, but by commissions, grants, project stipends, residencies and by their own income. A lot of the funds are coming to aid in the execution of new series, but usually these funders are not asking for the resulting artwork. Finally, how does this work methodology further detach as well as relate itself to art production throughout history?
