After receiving his MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2011, James R Southard started working with video and large-scale digital photography. Many of these projects were created while working at one of the ten artists residencies he attended, such as Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Vermont Studio Center, MASS MoCA, Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture among others. The projects revolved around collaborating with local community groups or individuals, and responds to the community's circumstances and landscapes. When not working on projects outside of the bluegrass, James is teaching full time at the University of Kentucky.
