with Artist Whitney Bradshaw
Friday, October 25 - 11:15AM to 12:45PM
Saint Kate Hotel: Lyrical
Whitney Bradshaw will lead one of her so-called scream sessions, during which she will make portraits of individual participants as part of her Outcry series. Bradshaw initiated this social practice project the night of the Women's March in 2018. Since then, she has photographed over 300 women in an effort to provide them with a safe space in which they can practice speaking up and out for themselves while taking up space, being heard, supported, and encouraged by a strong community of women. The resulting portraits will be printed and included in future iterations of Outcry. When installed together these powerful portraits become a monumental act of resistance. Nine of Bradshaw's Outcry portraits are included in the Midwest SPE Members Exhibition opening at the Brooks Stevens Gallery at MIAD during the conference. You can also learn more about Outcry and some of Bradshaw's other work on the SPE website/members portfolios.
The photo shoot will begin promptly at 11:15 am with introductions and an overview of the project by the artist. From there Bradshaw will lead the group through a series of practice screams, before everyone is invited to individually express themselves in front of the camera. Each participant will have the choice to scream on their own or with the support of the group screaming alongside them. After each participant has had one turn in front of the camera they will have the opportunity to do it a second time so they can really own it! The sessions are powerful, therapeutic, and fun!
Due to the limited amount of time we have for the session (1.5 hours), enrollment will be capped at 20. Anyone who identifies as a woman is welcome to participate. Due to the number of participants for this event we ask that you only register if you plan on attending. To register please email Whitney at whitbradshaw@gmail.com and write Outcry Scream Session Registration in the subject line. All participants will be required to sign a model release form prior to the session allowing Whitney to use their portrait in future iterations of Outcry including accompanying press, publications, and the like. Feel free to email Whitney with any questions you might have about the session.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
