Overcoming narratives of people with disabilities saturate our media. Photographs of disabled people frequently aim to over-emphasize ordinary experiences or create sympathy in order to give the viewer "the feels" without taking into consideration the broader social construction of disability that plays into this sort of image-making. I have always been a part of the disability community as a caregiver and advocate for my older sister. In a brief presentation, I will address several photographic projects that directly reflect the way I have used photography to collaborate with people with disabilities in order to question ideas of representation, our built environment, and the disability experience.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
