Artist-Run Gallery Collectives 101: The Nuts and Bolts of one Midwestern Model

Panel

Friday, October 25 - 1:00PM to 2:30PM
Saint Kate Hotel: Simone Ball Room B

How do you get your work shown? How do you become part of the artist community, show experimental work, or collaborate with other artists? Sometimes the answer is to do it yourself-- band together with other artists and take the reigns. Rosalux Gallery is Minneapolis' oldest artist-run gallery collective. Artist-run gallery collectives like Rosalux fit into a niche in the art ecosystem along with commercial galleries, project spaces, and museums. They allow artists to create a strong community, present experimental work, and be a vital component of the arts scene.

We will share the nuts and bolts of how we have structured the 24-member collective, and the benefits and challenges of this model. We would like to present on this model with the idea that other artists could take this way of working, tailor it to their own cities, interests, and abilities, and recreate it in their own way.
