It's a Heavy Cross to Carry
Saturday, October 15 - 11:10AM to 12:00PM
It is no secret that Latinx communities are underserved and underrepresented throughout small towns in Texas and all over the Southwest. Oftentimes, outsiders come in and try to tell our stories, guide our creative process, and dictate what art is considered "acceptable" for small-town Texas. Growing up surrounded by stories that didn't center her, and artwork that she never saw herself in, as an artist Magaly now has the power to change things.
After beginning a journey to retrace her history as a first-generation Mexican-American Chicana, Magaly began photographing intimate moments between different family members and self-portraits. She wants to tell the story of her people's strength and resilience, and of a people who have survived beautifully even after facing oppression, racism, and erasure.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
