Gabi Magaly is a Houston-based Chicana lens-based artist, born in Bryan-College Station, Texas. Her self-portraiture explores self-worth, independence, and the generational impact of traditional expectations on women in Mexican-American and Chicana cultures. Influenced by Nan Goldin and Elinor Carucci, Magaly draws inspiration from their raw, intimate storytelling and their ability to reveal profound truths through vulnerable imagery. Her work challenges the absence of Brown women in Eurocentric and white feminist art histories. Through her photographs, Magaly confronts machismo and marianismo, offering a voice to women navigating resilience, struggle, and empowerment in environments shaped by cultural tradition.
