Reclaiming Soledad

Photography as Resistance and Reflection

Saturday, October 11 - 12:00PM to 12:45PM
IPE Building

Inspired by her personal journey of reclaiming strength after a 12-year relationship, Gabi Magaly explores how photography can challenge inherited roles—nurturing caregiver, submissive wife, self-sacrificing mother—that often define women within Mexican-American culture. Her work reframes Soledad (solitude) not as emptiness, but as empowerment.

Rooted in Mexican-American iconography and cultural memory, Magaly uses self-portraiture, installation, and performance to reclaim solitude as resistance and healing. Drawing on the strength of her Chicana foremothers, she redefines solitude as a transformative space for creativity and liberation.

Her presentation shares recent works that center body, emotion, and ritual, visualizing the shedding of imposed identities. By blending photography with embroidery and sculptural forms, Magaly creates layered narratives that honor both personal and collective histories.

This session invites bold dialogue about how artists of color, particularly women, navigate cultural expectations, rupture, and healing. Magaly positions photography not only as documentation or expression, but as a tool for self-definition, empowerment, and community connection.
