Until Further Notice

Once, the artist was mother, "vehicle by law"—a body in motion, measured in miles, waiting, monotony, and unseen labor. Until Further Notice is a record of that in-between. Archived in phone-camera images, looped in '90s-2000s cartoon roadways, and tufted into monk's cloth, the work absorbs the weight of frustration and transforms it into something that stays.

This installation grows out of Marion's experience as a queer single mother navigating a custody battle that demanded daily drives between Houston and Beaumont. Her 2004 Honda CR-V became both a container and a site for reclaiming agency. Each tufted thread, stitched text message, and looped stretch of highway documents not just a personal journey, but the relentlessness of maternal care, endurance, and resistance.

The process is intentionally raw—made in carpool lines, parking lots, and moments of urgency. Through documentation, humor, and fiber work, Marion creates a space where the overlooked becomes visible, where the weight of care is shared. Audiences are not just observers but passengers and witnesses, drawn into the ongoing journey until her daughter ages out of the custody agreement.

This is work that resists erasure. It is not only her story, but a reflection of countless women navigating similar systems, made for her daughter and for others caught in these battles.
