The GRACE Project - Isis Charise

Saturday, November 07 - 3:00PM to 3:45PM

Grace is a series of empowering portraits of women who have had mastectomy surgery as a result of breast cancer.

In a world where beauty is narrowly defined by our contemporary culture, it is the ultimate challenge for for the subjects of my photographs to face their insecurities as they stand naked and raw before my camera. My goal as a photographer and a woman is to help shift the narrow perspective that we as woman need to fit, in order to feel worthy within our culture.

Having now photographed more than 160 women living with the challenge of mastectomy surgery, I’ve learned that the pink ribbon splashed all over the month of October diminishes the prolific devastation women experience in the face of breast cancer. The mortality rate for breast cancer has not changed. Surgery and reconstruction leaves women feeling mutilated and many women are not candidates for reconstruction due to the extent of their cancer.

Initially, my goal was to create enough images for a book and exhibit. As I continue photographing, witnessing many tears and watching friends die, I have become not only an advocate for women and body image but a voice for women with breast cancer.

The story that is written on each woman’s body as a result of her treatment is unique, but the transformation that she experiences as a result of participating in this project, standing naked before my camera speaks deeply to her soul.

My current goal is to photograph 800 women, the approximate number of women newly diagnosed in the United States on a daily basis, revealing the staggering number of women affected by this disease.
