"MELT" - Deanna Witman

Friday, November 06 - 3:30PM to 4:15PM
CGS 129

MELT is a project that deals with the idea of climate change via a new photographic landscape and seeks engagement with the viewer to promote dialogue and hopefully change in behavior.

The presentation will include three prongs: the images, the process and evolution of the project, and the public par8cipa8on component, which will take place in October 2015 (funded by SPACE Gallery through The Kindling Fund (www.kindlingfund.org).

I hope to invigorate discussion with conference attendees about the idea which was grew to encompass several fronts to generate community and viewer dialogue and how this type of advocacy in art can invite participation from many parts of society.

I travelled the earth via the internet to visit the world’s historic snowiest peaks. From satellite imagery, I created photographs printed in the 19th century salted paper photographic process. A selected number of the exhibition images are created to be ephemeral, fading over the course of the exhibition invoking the sense of change. The public is invited and encouraged to view the fading snow peaks over time drawing awareness to our changes in world climate.

As an extension of the exhibition in late October 2015, I am undertaking a public participation component consisting of two phases. The first phase involves the printing and mailing of a quantity of small postcard-size unfixed salt prints to residents of Maine ranging form the average citizen to media representative, scientists, and creatives. The images will be sent in a light-tight black poly envelope with a description of the project and choice of whether or not to open the envelope. (Like the prints in the exhibition, these small prints are ephemeral if exposed to UV light.) Recipients will make a conscious decision as to if, and how o`en to open the envelope which will contribute to the image disappearance. This decision parallels our decisions made daily which affect climate change.
