Understanding Professional Cultures Through Teaching Business

Barry Schwartz

Saturday, November 15 - 3:00PM to 4:30PM
NYFA: 3300 Riverside Drive, Burbank, CA, 91505

I will explicate how teaching business practices can compliment and expand on existing curricula.

Developing a professional career includes a set of common experiences: developing resumes, CVs, and cover letters; knowledge of contracts and negotiating; developing marketing materials such as portfolios and websites; social media marketing; insurance; continuing education (including graduate studies); copyright law and registration; digital asset management; basic accounting skills; learning how to budget and price projects; color management, and public presentation.

An important skillset needed for career success is gaining a clear comprehension of the "culture" of the specialties and professional arenas a student is pursuing, be it fine art, fashion, journalism, advertising, or any number of combinations. Additionally, as students enter the professional world, they need to be cognizant of other career possibilities such as being a curator, photo editor, educator, or a full-time assistant.

Understanding how to find and use resources is critical: research skills being integral to business skills because they are used in daily practice.

In the current, somewhat disruptive time of change, learning the ways business skills support photographic and technical training provides an important "leg up" as students develop skillsets and careers.
