TRANS, Disclosure and Femme in Butch Clothing

D. Hill

Saturday, November 15 - 4:30PM to 5:15PM
NYFA: 3300 Riverside Drive, Burbank, CA, 91505

I have been inspired by political analysis articles and contemporary artist whose work deals with gender and marginalized identities. Over the past five years, I have been exploring one of Judith Butler's philosophical concepts, gender performativity. My goal is present three bodies of work that encapsulate this theory at the SPE regional conference; TRANS, Disclosure and Femme in Butch Clothing.

TRANS is a video commentary exploring how media influence, if not set the standard, as to how masculinity and femininity are performed. The performance attempts to construct and deconstruct those standards. It is through Trans, we can experience the art of acting out desires; the desire to be recognized and the desire to be fluid with one's own gender identity.

In Disclosure, I create a video performance that explores gender transition. The video gives viewers an interpersonal experience of hybridity with the artist's identity and reveals the beauty of identifying as transgender. This narrative imbues non-conventional ideas about gender re-assignment and sets the stage for revealing a new sense of self. The experience of this video can inculcated others about a broader gender and culture discourse.

Femme in Butch clothing is a series of photographs depicting lives of various women who feel masculinity is gender neutral. I have chosen to photograph this subject matter to show viewers the women's interpretation of femininity and masculinity as a counter-response to society's visual expectation of them. These women have chosen to be comfortable with their outward masculine choices, while keeping their inner femininity.
