My work is an exploration of identity and power in the 21st century, with a focus on social interactions within evolving technologies. As a queer Latina, I believe that emerging technology allows marginalized voices to be heard and claim space. Having grown up on the Internet, I approach art making through the aesthetics of the Millennial Generation, employing trends, social media, and "selfie" culture as tools for rebellion. I am interested in the critical examination of the social experiences of women as my beliefs are grounded in visibility, activism, and intersectional feminism.
Many of my pieces act as a physical representation of an online experience. I slow down the hyper speed of technology by extracting virtual content and translating it into physical space in works like #weouthere and Kittens and Porn. I believe that the Zeitgeist of our technological culture emerges when encapsulated outside of the digital space. This allows more time to examine the cultural self, new communal languages, and identity production.
Technology also allows me to virtually insert myself into spaces I would normally not be granted access because of my status as a queer Latina. In ⇧Ctrl/⌘Pwr [ShiftControl/CommandPower], I employ digital technology to confront spaces otherwise difficult for women to navigate. In gracias por los tender grrrl hugz #sisterhood #wordtoyourmother I queer religious imagery to navigate my cultural heritage and apply these notions to my own hybrid identity. In these acts I hope to illuminate contemporary modes of photography as forms of self-preservation, empowerment, and resistance.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
